Pearl specifications
Kind
Freshwater: cultured in lakes and rivers. Akoya: saltwater pearls mainly from Japan, known for their high lustre. Tahitian: dark pearls mainly from Polynesia. South Sea: large, rare pearls mainly from the oceans around Australia and the Philippines.
Type
Cultured: a pearl that formed with a little human help, by inserting a nucleus into the shell, after which it continued to grow naturally on its own. This is the usual standard in jewellery today. Natural: a pearl that formed without human intervention, now extremely rare and almost never used in jewellery.
Diameter
The greater a pearl's diameter, the rarer and more valuable it is. Naturally, this applies only when comparing sizes within the same type of pearl.
Surface
The cleaner the surface, the more valuable the pearl. Under the SGI standard, grade A+ denotes an almost flawless surface with only minor characteristics outside the front view. Grade A allows 1–4 small characteristics, while grade B allows up to 6 minor imperfections.
